Binzhou lies in the hinterland of the Yellow River Delta, southwest bank of the Bohai Sea Gulf. The city borders Dongying in the east, Zibo in the south and Dezhou in the west. Jinan, the capital city of the Shandong province, is located on the southeast of Binzhou. In the northwest, the city is separated from Henan Province by a river. The terrain of the city is higher in the south and lower in the north, gradually declining toward the northeast region into the Bohai Sea. Binzhou is a national transportation hub that connects several major Chinese provinces together, which are Jiangsu, Shandong, Beijing and Tianjin.
Binzhou occupies an area of 9,600 square kilometers. It governs Bincheng District, Huimin County, Yangxin County, Wudi County, Zhanhua County, Boxing County, Zouping County, Municipal Economic Development Zone, Municipal High and New-Tech Zone and Beihai Economic Development Zone. With a population of 3.8 million people, Binzhou is the biggest and most populated city of the Yellow River Delta Efficient Ecological Economic
Zone. The city been chosen as the key area for economic and industrial development to take place.
The Shandong province falls within the North China climatic region, which extends from the Huai River in the south to the Hebei-Liaoning border in the north. It is characterized by a continental climate with cold winters and hot, dry summers. The northern sections of Shandong are subject to the full effect of the winter monsoon where starting in fall, northwesterly winds continue through December. The wind direction gradually reverses by March, and warmer, southeasterly winds prevail throughout the summer.
Situated in Shandong, Binzhou also has a sub-humid continental monsoon climate and it has distinctive weather in four seasons. The weather condition in Binzhou is warm in the spring with little to no rainfall, hot and humid in the summer, cool and breezy in the fall and mostly cold and dry in winter. More than half of the annual precipitation falls in July and August. In the winter, there are occasional snowfalls but heavy snowfalls are uncommon. The annual temperature in the city ranges approximately from -7.8℃ (18℉) to 31.3℃ (88.3℉).
